One of the oldest county forces.
At an adjourned meeting of the Justices of the County which was held in the Grand Jury Room of the Assizes of Durham City the first Chief Constable was appointed on the 10th of December 1839, however the first members of the force were appointed on the 20th January 1840.
In 1928, the Police Committee authorised the purchase of a Prison Van (Black Maria) together with a Motor Cycle Combination and a Daimler Motor Car.
This model has been commissioned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the force and bears the registration number of the first prison van; Registration number XG 4.
